It Takes Just a Few Minutes to Start Your Barbering Career Below

Barbering is a Specialty of Cosmetology

Cosmetology is a profession that is all about making the human body look more attractive through the use of cosmetics. So naturally it makes sense that numerous cosmetology schools are described as beauty schools. Most of us think of makeup when we hear the word cosmetics, but really a cosmetic can be anything that improves the look of a person's skin, hair or nails. In order to work as a barber, most states mandate that you take some form of specialized training and then be licensed. Once you are licensed, the work settings include not only Massachusetts barber shops, but also such businesses as spas, hotels and resorts. Many barbers, after they have gotten experience and a customer base, launch their own shops or salons. Others will begin servicing customers either in their own homes or will go to the client's home, or both. Cosmetology college graduates have many names and are employed in a wide variety of specialties including:

• Hairstylists
• Beauticians
Barbers
• Manicurists
• Nail Technicians
• Makeup Artists
• Hair Coloring Specialists
• Estheticians
• Electrolysis Technicians

As previously mentioned, in every state working barbers must be licensed. In certain states there is an exception for cosmetologists in general. Only those conducting more skilled services, for instance barbers or hairstylists, are required to be licensed. Others employed in cosmetology and less skilled, which include shampooers, are not required to get licensed in those states.
